Oh, was today the longest day ever. Still – a long day driving is better than being at work! It was only 6.5 hours, the exact same amount of time we drove two days before (which flew by) but today dragged. The first 2 hours the weather was so pleasant being up higher. We drove with the windows down and the 77 degree breeze tossed my hair around and I actually dozed off for a bit.
Then, the lower down we went through Arizona and into Nevada – 105, 108, 113 degrees.
Coming from the Midwest I will take this dry heat over the humidity any day, but damn is it HOT.
We got into Vegas around 3. It sounds funny saying we are camping in Vegas but we really are! It’s essentially a giant parking lot with lots of other RVs but hey, it beats a $140/night hotel room on the strip.
The first thing we did after setting up was walk into the casino on the campground. Yep. Oh, Vegas.
We found a buffet and you can bet (ha!) we hit (ha ha!) that up. Then we meandered through the casino and I promptly lost $13 all in the short time Turkey was in the restroom.
We decided the cold, oxygen filled room was too good to pass up so we bought movie tickets (oh, yes because there’s also an 18 screen movie theatre, as well as a bowling alley on this RV resort!) to see Jurassic World again at 7:30 tonight. Air conditioning, popcorn and candy sounds perfect.
What a funny and different day today has been compared to everything we’ve been doing. There are people everywhere. It’s loud. There’s traffic and loud music and it’s basically sensory overload. Sometimes it’s nice to mix it up though, because in just a few short days we will be living out of our backpacks for a week in the Sierra backcountry.
It will be wildly, vastly opposite of this day.
As the real reason for our journey out west approaches I am becoming more excited and ready to get off the road, disconnect from the world and enjoy nature.
Tomorrow we finally hit California. It’s been a very long and wonderful week. I’m ready for our greatest challenge yet!
See you soon.

How fun! I remember “camping” in Vegas when I was a kid. Like you, we were in a parking lot with our motorhome. That was back when Vegas was old-style Vegas in the 1970s. 🙂 Can’t wait for you to reach California, my home.
